This week, I’m diving into one of the most overlooked but impactful features in Notion: Sorting.

Whether you’re managing a project, prioritizing tasks, or just want a bird’s-eye view of what’s coming up, sorting can help you get there faster.

Let’s explore how to sort your way to success.

📚 Weekly Learning Exclusive

Sorting in Notion is how you arrange your database pages based on specific properties like due dates, priority levels, or names.

There are two main ways to sort, and you can use them together as well. More on that later.

The two sorts are: Ascending & Descending

Ascending: This orders items from the smallest to the largest or the earliest to the latest. Think of it as a countdown timer: smaller numbers or earlier dates rise to the top. Perfect for prioritizing what’s next, such as upcoming meetings or tasks.

Example: Sorting a task list by ascending due dates shows what’s due soonest at the top.

Descending: This flips the order of your pages. Showing the biggest number or latest date first. Perfect for reviewing completed tasks or focusing on high-impact items first.

Example: Sorting a task list by descending priority highlights the most critical items at the top.

Stacking Sorts for Deeper Insights

Once you’re comfortable with a single sort, it’s time to level up by stacking multiple sorts together. This helps when your data has several layers of importance.

Here’s how it works:

1. Choose your Primary Sort, such as due date ascending to see what’s due soon.
2. Add as many Secondary Sorts as you need, for example priority descending to show urgent tasks with a due date soon (from the primary sort).

This is a great way to show things in a very specific order. Once you have it right, you can keep adding pages and have them organized right where you want them.

How to Set Up Sorts in Notion

1. Go to any database in Notion.
2. Select “+ Add a Sort.”
3. Pick the property you want to sort by.
4. Choose ascending or descending.
5. Add a second sort for deeper viewing.

And if you want to keep this setup, save it as a custom view so you don't have to redo it.

Create views for “Today’s Tasks,” “Next Week’s Projects,” or “High Priority Focus,” depending on what you need.

Sorting + Filters: Your Power Combo

Sorting shines brightest when paired with filters.

Here's a power combo to use:

1. Filter: Show tasks assigned to you and due this week.
2. First Sort: Priority (Descending) → See urgent tasks first.
3. Second Sort: Due Date (Ascending) → Organize them by when they’re due.

Save this as your go-to view, and you’ll always have your week planned at a glance

It's as simple as that.
